Service Description
Jazz Dance is a performance dance technique and style that first emerged in the United States in the early twentieth century. Jazz dance refers to vernacular Jazz or to Broadway or theatrical Jazz, both genres build on African-American vernacular styles of dancing that emerged with Jazz music. The term 'Jazz Dance' has been used in ways that have little or nothing to do with Jazz Music. Since the 1940s, Hollywood movies and Broadway shows have used the term to describe the choreographies of Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. In the 1990s, colleges and universities applied the term to classes offered in which students dance to various forms of Pop Music. Today, Jazz Dance is influenced by Pop Music and can be seen in concerts and video clips for artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Dua Lipa. Famous movies that feature Jazz Dance are Happy Feet, Beauty and the Beast, Billy Elliot, Step Up and West Side Story, just to name a few. Jazz dance enhances flexibility, movement and fitness. Emma will be teaching the fundamentals of Jazz Dance and the following subjects will be covered: Introduction to Dance – what is dancing? Physical awareness – how to use your body to tell a story.
